Bunk Leicester dimmable E27 lighting

Replacement Bell LED lamps illuminate normally but switch off before the control reaches its lowest setting. The Bell pack shown is dimmable; the behaviour points to a low-end compatibility, minimum-load or dimmer-trim issue rather than proof that the lamps are faulty.

New LED lamps drop out at low brightness

OpenBell replacements turn off sooner than old Megaman lamps

Identity confirmed

  • Old: Megaman LC7209.5-E27-2800K / UK SKU 142574, 9.5W, E27, 2800K, 810lm, dimmable.
  • New pack: Bell 8.1W, E27/ES, 2700K, 810lm, 240V, dimmable symbol shown.
  • Bell sells visually similar dimmable and non-dimmable versions. The photographed dimmable specification most closely matches Genesis part 60680; confirm the barcode/end-flap code before reordering.

Diagnosis

  1. The Bell LED driver has a higher minimum conduction threshold than the Megaman.
  2. An older leading-edge dimmer or non-LED dimmer may not support the new lamps.
  3. Six Bell lamps total only 48.6W; fewer lamps draw even less and may fall below the dimmer's minimum load.
  4. An adjustable dimmer's low-end trim may be set below the Bell lamps' stable range.
  5. Mixed lamp types on one dimmer can create unstable or unequal dimming.

Current decision

The Bell lamps are not automatically “wrong”: they are sold as dimmable but only with a compatible LED dimmer. Switching off near the bottom is a recognised LED dropout symptom. First test one complete circuit with matching Bell lamps and record the dimmer details. If dropout remains, use a competent electrician to set the low-end trim or fit a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer. If preserving the old range matters and stock is genuine, a like-for-like Megaman 142574 is the lowest-change lamp trial.

Safe controlled test

Separate lamp behaviour from dimmer/load failure

  1. Photograph the dimmer: front, make/model and any label—without removing it. Count every lamp controlled by it and record whether all switch off together.
  2. Isolate before lamp changes: switch off the circuit, allow lamps to cool and use only intact E27 lamps of the same model.
  3. Remove mixed types: on one test circuit fit all Bell dimmable lamps; do not mix Bell, Megaman and non-dimmable lamps.
  4. Start at full: switch on at maximum, then lower slowly. Mark the position where flicker begins and where all lamps extinguish. Repeat once while raising from minimum.
  5. Compare one known-good old lamp: if safe and available, restore the old Megaman arrangement and repeat. A much lower stable point confirms combination-specific compatibility, not necessarily a wiring fault.
  6. Check the load: number of Bell lamps × 8.1W. Compare that total with the dimmer's published LED minimum and maximum—not its incandescent rating.
  7. Electrician stage: ask a competent electrician to identify leading/trailing-edge type, check neutral/wiring, confirm LED load and set any manufacturer-provided minimum-brightness trim. Do not open the live control yourself.

Stop and isolate: burning smell, crackling, excessive heat, arcing, repeated breaker trips or erratic operation above normal brightness. A clean, repeatable switch-off only at the lowest setting is usually compatibility/dropout, but it should still be corrected if that low range is operationally required.

If the Bell lamps are retained, the robust fix may be a dimmer selected from the lamp/dimmer compatibility data, with a suitable LED load range and adjustable low-end trim. Selection and fitting should be by a competent electrician after counting the circuit load.
